Jim Melrose was born in 7th October 1958 in Duke Street Hospital, Glasgow to (Father) Harry & Marina (Mother) Melrose also (Brother) Frankie. Jim was Educated at Thomson Street Primary School and Whitehill Secondary School.

Jim started training with Partick Thistle when he was 11. When he was 13 he signed an associated form with them just after they had beaten Celtic in the League Cup Final. At the time he played for Eastercraigs. He turned Professional when he was 15 and a half in 1975. Jim Broke into the 1st team at Partick Thistle when he was 16. Jim spent 5yrs professionally before moving on the Filbert St.

When Jim was Signed by Jock Wallace for Leicester City in 10th June 1980 it was the 3rd time Leicester had paid a club record £250000. Leicester who had just been promoted to the old 1st division as 2nd division title holders. At Leicester Jim played alongside Gary Lineker amongst others

Jim said the Jock Wallace was the best man manager he ever played for and that Jock tried to sign him a couple of times when he was at Rangers.

13th September 1982 joined Coventry city In exchange for Tommy English, The transfer was completed in time for Jim to make his debut against Everton at Highfield Road. Jim Scored a hat trick on his debut to set them up for a 4-2 win.

Jim joined Celtic in 1983 for £100000 in August replacing fans favourite Charlie Nicholas. He played his 1st game on the 13th August in a Glasgow cup defeat to Rangers. On Saturday 20th August Jim scored on his League debut for Celtic against Hibs. Despite impressive performances in the reserves and 1st Team performances Jim couldn’t establish himself as a regular starter and was sent to Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan. His Last appearance for Celtic being on 21st August 1984 in a 3-2 win against Dunfermline. He Left Celtic with 3 Runners up medals for his time at Parkhead.

On the 7th November 1984, Billy McNeil took Jim to Maine Road for £40000. He made his Manchester City debut on the 10th November against Birmingham City and helped them gain promotion to the old 1st division in 1984-85. He didn’t stay long at Maine Rd and played his last game on Boxing day 1985 against Liverpool in a 1-0 win. Moving on to Charlton Athletic.

In March 1986 signed for Charlton Athletic for £45000. Charlton were battling with Leicester city to avoid relegation from the top flight. Due to expecting their 3rd child and his wife not wanting to move to London he joined Leeds United in September 1987. Soon after his wife went into labour on the Friday, She had a baby girl on the Saturday. Manager Billy Bremner told Jim to go to London to play against Millwall. Jim explained that he had 2 boys at home to look after that he couldn’t travel, He never played for Leeds again.

In August 1990 Jim had a brief spell in the conference with Macclesfield Town, This only lasted a month as Jim fell out of love for the game and after 16yrs of first team football he moved on to other things.

Jim tried his hand at being an agent he was responsible for taking Neil Lennon to Leicester. Then manager Martin O’Neil decided that he was a decent judge of a player and offered him the chief scout’s job in November 1996, This was a job that was too good to refuse.

Jim left Filbert Street when O’Neil left to manage Celtic. Jim didn’t want to return to Glasgow so went into banking with a finance company in Manchester who wanted to get into funding transfer fees etc

Jim currently runs 2 businesses 1 project finance and another disinfectant company.
